The confrontation of two superpowers - the USSR and the USA began immediately after the end of World War II. Faced two diametrically opposed ideologies - communism and capitalism, the struggle began for human minds and resources. The Cold War lasted almost half a century, during which time many symbols of confrontation appeared - obvious and hidden, but, nevertheless, entitled to such a positioning.

Cold war and space achievements of the USSR and the USA
The Cold War got its name due to the fact that an open military conflict between the USSR and the USA did not happen. Both countries quickly seized nuclear weapons, and it became a deterrent in the confrontation between the two superpowers. This marked the beginning of an endless arms race, as a result of which the economies of the warring countries worked in large part for their armies.
What are the symbols of the cold war? There are a lot of them. For example, one of the striking examples of rivalry between superpowers is the struggle for space exploration. Each achievement of one side was a challenge for the other. The first Soviet artificial earth satellite, launched into orbit on October 4, 1957, was an outstanding achievement of the Soviet Union, a symbol of victory in the space race. Even more grandiose success was the flight of Yuri Gagarin, April 12, 1961 circled the Earth on the spaceship "Vostok-1". At the same time, US experts knew that the R-7 rocket, which delivered Gagarin to orbit, could carry a nuclear warhead.
There were our other victories - a photograph of the far side of the moon, the first Soviet Lunokhod. The response of the Americans was the landing of people on the moon. In fairness, it is worth noting that for many skeptics the reality of these flights is still in great doubt.
One cannot fail to mention the famous Star Wars program, the creation by the Americans of Space Shuttle space shuttles. The Soviet side’s response was the Energy-Buran space program, all of which are also vivid symbols of the Cold War. Colossal funds were spent on their implementation, which in many ways did not pay for themselves. The confrontation of superpowers in space has become one of the most striking manifestations of the Cold War.
