The main character is Pip, an orphan living at the forge in his sister’s house. Despite mistreatment, he grows up as a kind child, capable of compassion. The case brings him to the fugitive convict Abel Megwich, who forces the boy to help him get the file. The child, driven by fear, fulfills the criminal's request, bringing with him also a piece of the pie for the hungry Megwich. The boy’s deed touches the convict to the core. Later, the fugitive is seized and returned to prison.
Soon Pete receives an unexpected invitation to the house of the mysterious Miss Havisham, who has lived in seclusion for many years. There he meets Estella, her adopted daughter. “Love her, ” the old maid whispers to a boy who, without any instructions, falls in love with a young aristocrat.
Miss Havisham awakens great hopes for a bright future in the heart of a naive child, which she then destroys by sending him back to the forge and forbidding to see Estella.
After several years, lawyer Jeggers, the executor of Miss Havisham, appears in Pip's house, with extraordinary news - the young man becomes the heir to a huge fortune. The identity of the benefactor remains a secret and will be disclosed only on the day of the hero's coming of age. The guy should immediately leave for London, starting the life of a real gentleman there. With great hopes, Pete sets off to meet his fate, unaware of the mysterious and tragic events that await him.
