According to the genre of "In the Fog" - a historical drama. This is the second director’s work. And her film critics predict a great future. At least they believe that Loznitz at the Cannes Film Festival has every chance of winning.
The main role in the film was played by a graduate of GITIS Belarusian actor Vladimir Svirsky. The role of partisan punishers went to the actor from Yekaterinburg Sergey Kolesov and Muscovite Vlad Abashin. Also in the film were Mikhail Evlanov, Boris Karmozin, Nadezhda Markina, Julia Peresild. The episodes involved residents of the places where the shooting took place.
The picture of Loznitsa presented earlier - "My Happiness" - caused a lot of complaints. The director was accused of excessive cruelty. And "In the Fog, " judging by the few fragments, promises to be just as harsh. It is not surprising. After all, the actions described in the picture take place in wartime. More precisely - in 1942 in Belarus occupied by fascist invaders.
The plot itself is based on the novel of the same name by the Belarusian writer Vasil Bykov, all of whose works are striking in their truthfulness and accuracy. No wonder he is considered one of the most honest authors who masterfully describe the events of the Second World War. It was they who formed the basis of the film by Sergey Loznitsa.
The action of the picture takes place in Belarus. The plot begins with the fact that the partisans, on assignment, are going to destroy one of the civilians in the village - the trackman Sushchenya. In their detachment, they came to the decision that he was a traitor. In fact, Sushchenko was falsely accused of collaborating with the invaders. Later it turns out that the partisans were mistaken. In fact, the condemned is a decent person, by coincidence, in an unpleasant situation. But he cannot prove his case. Hoping to demonstrate her innocence, Sushenya is trying to make a moral choice in the circumstances. But the result was still sad.
The film, like the work of Vasil Bykov, ends tragically. But such is our story. Without embellishment.
