The word GOST in our minds is clearly associated with the concept of “quality”. However, few people know that since 2002 in the Russian Federation, compliance with GOST requirements in production is not mandatory. The modern standardization system is based on technical regulations, but no one has canceled GOSTs.

Pay attention to the spelling. Just GOST - State Standard (State All-Union Standard) - this is a standard adopted back in the USSR, at a time when everything was subject to mandatory standardization. Many of them continue to operate so far, having undergone only a small revision. GOST R - the state standard of the Russian Federation. The sequence of numbers following these letters means: ХХХХХ-ХХ - registration number and year of adoption of the standard, ХХХХ.ХХ-ХХ - registration number, standardization group and registration year, ХХХХ.ХХ.ХХ
.-XX - standard system number, classes, subclasses, and year of approval of the standard.

Check out the content of the GOST you are interested in at the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology. The easiest way to do this is on their official website standard.gost.ru. Please note that the texts of the requirements of all GOSTs are laid out in the form of scanned images. This is done because the texts of state standards should not be reprinted in order to avoid typographical errors and inaccuracies. In addition, there are many more online resources on which you can familiarize yourself with the requirements of a particular state standard, including the Soviet era, as well as view its status (changed, approved, canceled, etc.) and, if necessary, get as a text file. However, most often, such resources operate on a paid basis.

Read the labels on food carefully. Many unscrupulous manufacturers lure customers by using the word "GOST" in the product name in capital letters and only then specify in small print that the product is manufactured in accordance with TU (technical condition), not inferior in quality to the requirements of GOST. Of course, this does not mean that the product will necessarily turn out to be bad, but since manufacturers usually install technical specifications themselves, be prepared for the fact that the quality of the product will be far from your expectations. Therefore, it is not superfluous to remember GOSTs of at least two popular products: stew - GOST 5284-84, condensed milk GOST 2903-78 or GOST R 53436-2009.
Useful advice
If on the label with the bright word GOST any other numbers follow, then you are dealing with a manufacturer-deceiver.
