For more than a hundred years, the world has been fighting the use and distribution of narcotic substances. Already in February 1909, thirteen countries that took part in the work of the Shanghai Opium Commission tried to find ways to limit the traffic of narcotic substances from Asian countries. Russia was one of the participants in the international commission. But even after more than a hundred years, law enforcement agencies of all countries are still too far from a complete victory over the drug business.
According to statistics, more than 2.5 million people are systematically using drugs in Russia. If we take into account all people who use drugs periodically, the figure will be twice as much. The achievements include the fact that the number of drug addicts does not increase, but at the same time it does not decrease. Every second drug addict does not live up to the age of 30 years.
International Day against Drug Use and Distribution is an event whose goal is to create a drug-free society that will lead addicted people and teach them how to live without drugs.
On this day, large-scale events are held around the world. Actions, seminars, confidential conversations, outreach, recognition of drug addicts who managed to find the strength and overcome the terrible dependence - this is what helps to attract public attention to the existing problem.
The observance of World Drug Day was approved by the UN General Assembly in 1978. This day is hardly a holiday. The whole horror of the problem calls people to solidarity, teaches us not to remain indifferent if someone nearby dies by taking another dose of the potion.
Higher, secondary and special educational institutions conduct lectures to which medical specialists and former drug addicts are invited, ready to tell the whole truth about drug addiction.
Charity concerts of pop stars take place around the world. All proceeds are sent to medical and rehabilitation centers where drug addicts undergo treatment.
