Family, early years
Roman Polanski was born on August 18, 1933. The family lived in Paris. Roman's parents are Polish Jews. When his son was 3 years old, they again began to live in Poland. During the war they fell into the ghetto, while Roman escaped. He was sheltered by a Polish family living in a farm.
Roman’s mother died, and his father survived and was able to find a son. At the insistence of his father, Roman began to study at a technical school, but dreamed of doing creative work. The decisive role was played by the movie "Out of the Game" that he saw.
Creative biography
In 1953, Polanski met with director Wajda Andrzej, who invited him to shoot the movie Generation. He saw that the youth was hiding considerable potential, and helped to enter the film school. However, Polanski did not finish his studies, as the topic of the diploma seemed uninteresting to him.
Roman shot several short films, then he was released to the film "Knife in the Water". In Poland, the picture was received coolly, but abroad it became successful, it was even presented at the Oscar.
Polanski began to live in England and continued to engage in filmmaking. In 1965, the film "Disgust" appeared with Deneuve Catherine. The tape became successful, received several awards. Polanski himself considers the film Dead End to be the best work, which was released a year later.
Great success was the picture "Baby Rosemary" (1968), which marked the beginning of fashion for mysticism. The film won many awards; several remakes were made based on it.
After the release of the picture, a tragedy occurred in the director's family - his sectarians killed his pregnant wife and 3 friends. Polanski went to Europe, where he shot several more paintings. The best of his work in the 70s is considered to be a film / set "Chinese Service". Of the subsequent paintings, the "Bitter Moon" became bright, but it received many negative reviews.
In 1977, Roman was accused of molesting a 13-year-old girl, he pleaded guilty. To avoid punishment, Polanski fled from the United States to Europe. He was arrested in 2009 when the director was in Switzerland. His colleagues stood up for Roman; the USA was refused extradition. And in 2017, the victim asked to dismiss the case.
Soon a new scandal erupted caused by the fact that, instead of punishment, Polanski was given the post of chairman of the Cesar Prize. After that, Roman refused this post.
