Torture and corporal punishment accompanied Russian history constantly. They were a means of gaining recognition, and sometimes just social advertising. The history of torture dates back to the times of Kievan Rus.
The concept of torture is even reflected in the law, however, they were applied only to suspects of serious crimes, and only by court order.

To begin with, a person from whom it was necessary to obtain a confession of guilt was "untied in a ring." Ropes were tied to the legs and arms of the accused, which were threaded into rings driven into the walls and ceiling. The subject thus hung in the air, stretched out in different directions. This was accompanied by dislocations and ruptures of the joints. This phase of torture was also called the "cradle of Judah." This type of torture was very popular due to the fact that its consequences were reversible. The joints were adjusted for the man, and he could work again. Thus, the state did not deprive itself of labor.
3
There was another, more sophisticated way of torture. The man was mounted on a horse, but instead of a saddle a metal tip was used. To enhance the pain effect, a load was suspended at the unfortunate feet.
4
The torture "thin jug" was very popular. For several hours, water was poured dropwise from the jug onto the shaved head of the convict. The case ended with the defendant simply losing his mind.
5
Those who abused alcohol were punished in a special way. The test subject was placed in a barrel of wine so that he could not get out of it on his own. The barrel was taken around the city for show, which in itself was a public humiliation. If a person was in an alcohol solution for a long time, soft tissues began to exfoliate from the bones, which caused incredible torment to the prisoner. Often such torture ended tragically, and a corpse was removed from the barrel.

Before Peter I introduced the fashion for smoking, this bad habit was also severely punished. Basically, they pulled out their tongues for educational purposes, and cut off their noses to some convicts.
Parshek comedians did not enjoy the honor in Russia. In the time of Ivan the Terrible, a special punishment was invented for them. Their fingers were clamped in a vice so that the bone came out of the skin, "like a bone made of cherry." After this procedure, the fingers could be removed because they remained non-functional.
