Elections of the President of the Russian Federation are held every six years using the voting procedure in which every adult citizen of the country has the right to participate. Elections are held in accordance with the articles of current law.
Instruction manual
1
Elections are held throughout the territory and in all subjects of the Russian Federation. The procedure is organized by a special body - the Central Election Commission (CEC) of the Russian Federation. The territorial and precinct election commissions help in the preparation and conduct of the vote.
2
The election date is announced by the Federation Council no later than 90 days in advance. Usually this day falls on the second Sunday of the month in which the previous elections were held. After the announcement of the date, the preparatory phase begins, during which candidates for the presidency are nominated.
3
For a successful nomination, a citizen must meet certain requirements that the CEC of the Russian Federation imposes. A nominee may be a member of a political party that has the right to participate and nominate its members in the election process. An ordinary citizen of the country who has the support of an initiative group with at least 500 members can also become a candidate. A self-nominated candidate must collect in his support 100 thousand signatures of voters in various constituent entities of the Russian Federation. If the candidate is nominated by a political party having the right to distribute deputy mandates, collection of signatures is not mandatory.
4
When registering, it is necessary to provide the CEC with signature lists of voters, a document confirming the payment of the print of signature sheets, a protocol with the results of the collection of signatures, and a list of people who helped to collect the votes. It is also required to present a financial report on the campaign. The commission shall inform about its decision in the registration of the candidate within 10 days after the submission of the documents.
5
On the date set by the Federation Council, voting is carried out at specially equipped polling stations using anonymous ballots, which are a list of those running for president. The voter is invited to vote only for one of the listed candidates. The completed ballot shall be lowered by the citizen into the ballot box.
6
The results are calculated by the territorial bodies of the election commission and checked by the CEC. The elected president is the candidate with more than 50% of the votes of all voters who participated in the procedure.
7
If during the counting process no one has crossed the 50% threshold, the second stage of voting is held. It is carried out between the candidates for whom the majority of citizens voted. The entire election and counting procedure remains the same as during the first stage. The candidate wins the election, for whom a greater number of voters voted in the second round.
