Childhood and youth
The future film director and screenwriter Gleb Anatolyevich Panfilov was born on May 21, 1934 in an ordinary Soviet family. At that time, parents lived in the famous city of Magnitogorsk. My father worked as a correspondent for a local newspaper. Mother was engaged in long-term planning in the economic department of the metallurgical plant. The boy grew up and developed in a friendly atmosphere. He was loved and prepared for an independent life. From an early age, the grandmother took the child to the theater for children's performances. She told him tales and taught him to read.
Father, as part of his profession, was seriously engaged in photography. He taught Gleb all the intricacies of photographic art. The boy was greatly impressed by the process of developing the images. He loved helping his father and watching how an image appeared on a blank sheet of paper under the influence of chemical solutions. Panfilov studied well at school. His favorite subject was chemistry. When it came time to choose a profession, he decided to get a specialized education at the chemical department of the Ural Polytechnic.

At this studio, the aspiring director shot his first short films, People’s Police and Nylon Jacket. In 1961, he was invited to the post of assistant to the chief editor of the Sverdlovsk television studio.
At the same time as working on television, Panfilov studied in absentia as a cameraman at VGIK. Then he graduated from the directorial course. In 1966, a certified director was accepted at the Lenfilm film studio. Panfilov’s first full-length film entitled “There is no ford on fire” was released a year later. Gleb Anatolyevich’s directorial career has developed quite successfully. In 1977, he moved to the Mosfilm studio. By this time, Panfilov’s assets included paintings “I ask you for words” and “Stepanova memo”.
