Nikolay Vasilyevich Gogol is an outstanding Russian and Ukrainian writer. Russia, France, Germany, Rome - the places where he created masterpieces, but these countries were only "stations", the main point of departure was the small village of Veliky Sorochintsy, which created such an amazing genius and still retains the spirit of his work.

Gogol's homeland
Nikolai Gogol was born in Ukraine, in a small village called Great Sorochintsy. The first part of the name of the village - "Great" - even before his birth predicted the fate of the writer.
In 1809, when Gogol was born, the Great Sorochintsy belonged to the Mirgorod district of the Poltava province.
This picturesque village is located in the Mirgorod district of the Poltava region, not far from the right bank of the river Psel. Today this place is the administrative center of Velikosorochinsky village council. Every year, a cultural event is held here - the Sorochinskaya Fair, which became famous after Gogol wrote his story about it.
In 1911, the first monument to the writer was erected in Sorochintsy, and in 1951, the N.V. literary and memorial museum was built in the same village. Gogol.
The family of Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol had more than 100 acres and 400 serf souls. The future writer spent his childhood in parental estates in the village of Vasilyevka (second name - Yanovschina). The cultural and educational center of the region was Kibintsy, where there was a huge library and home theater. For this theater, Gogol's father wrote comedies, played some roles in it, and even conducted.
Gogol's wanderings
Later Nikolai Gogol moved to Poltava and entered the Poltava district school. After graduating from the gymnasium of higher sciences in Nizhyn, he went to Petersburg with his classmate. For the first time in this city, he takes up a pen and causes a storm of applause among the public with his brilliant work “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka”.
After that, the novels “Nose” and “Taras Bulba” appeared. After writing The Examiner, Gogol falls into a creative depression and leaves for Germany. Work on the work "Dead Souls" took place in several stages. During the writing, Nikolai Vasilievich managed to visit Switzerland, Paris, Rome and Moscow.
Upon arrival in Moscow, after long trips, his health deteriorated, and on February 21, 1852, the heart of a genius stopped in a Moscow apartment. In 1931, the remains of the great writer were reburied at the Novodevichy cemetery.
