The term "information society" has become widespread relatively recently - in the last third of the twentieth century. This is a sociological and futurological concept, which considers the main factor in social development not a material product, but information and scientific and technical knowledge.

The main supporters of the concept of the information society were such American thinkers as J. Bell, A. Toffler and Z. Brzezinski. Considering the development of civilization as a sequential "change of stages", they believed that the information society was the last, following the industrial society, stage of human development. At this stage, capital and labor, which formed the basis of industrial society, gradually give way to the dominant place of information. Representatives of the concept of the "information society" associate its development with the predominance of the Quaternary, the information sector, which is formed in the wake of agriculture, industry and the economy of services.

According to representatives of this paradigm, the technological revolution of the late twentieth century, the general computerization and informatization of society created a completely new social situation in which radical changes occurred not only in public consciousness and mass culture, but also in the socio-economic structure. In particular, a significant intellectualization of the economy led to the erosion of the traditional, formerly monolithic, class of industrial workers; there was a cardinal change in the role of a person directly involved in production. In a modern developed society, labor related to obtaining and processing information has become dominant in the services market.

The main distinguishing features of the information society are:
- a sharp increase in the role of information and vocational knowledge in the life of all social groups;
- a significant increase in the share of information products and services in the domestic market;
- the emergence of a global global information space, uniting people on a planetary scale and providing them with access to world information resources;
- The effective implementation of the needs of society in information services and products.
