Russian readers who are fond of popular psychology are well acquainted with the works of Jorge Bukai. His books help people cope with problems and find a way out of difficult life situations.
Facts from the biography
The future psychotherapist and writer was born in the fall of 1949 in Argentina in an ordinary family. According to Jorge himself, his parents always dreamed that his son would become a doctor.
When the boy was four years old, an epidemic of poliomyelitis began in the country, many kids got this disease. He saw children on the streets with the consequences of an illness and asked his mother what had happened to them. All her explanations ended in tears. Jorge took to heart the suffering of people and literally felt their pain. It was in those years that my mother said that he would certainly become a good specialist and would help people cope not only with this disease, but also with many other problems.
The Jorge family lived very modestly and constantly needed money. To help parents, he started working early. He was a seller, storekeeper and insurance agent. He worked as a taxi driver and a clown.
Choice of profession
Already in his school years, Jorge began to dream about the profession of a doctor. Having received secondary education, the young man entered the university at the medical department.
At first, Jorge wanted to become a pediatrician. But, having started to study at the university, he realized that he could not bear the pain that the child was experiencing and put up with the fact that the doctor could not help him.
Once Bukai assisted during an operation performed on the baby. Doctors fought for his life for a long time, but could not help, and the child died. For Jorge, this was a personal tragedy. For a long time he could not come to his senses, and then finally decided that he could not become a good pediatrician, it was better for him to choose another direction of medical activity.
After a little thought, Bukai settled on child psychiatry. Soon he literally fell in love with this field of medicine and his patients. Later, already in his original programs and first books, Jorge talked about the fact that all doctors are hypochondriacs, with increased anxiety and fear of the disease. It is these character traits that lead people to the medical profession. He himself was always afraid of mental distress and insanity. That was the main reason Jorge began to study psychology and immerse himself in psychiatry.
After several years of work, Jorge began to feel that his fear was gradually disappearing. He began to work less with seriously ill patients and devote more time to patients with neurosis.
After many years of practice in the field of psychiatry, becoming a professional psychotherapist and psychoanalyst, Jorge began to advise ordinary people who need psychological support. Bukai devoted more than thirty years to medical practice.
Literary work
As a specialist in the field of psychology, Jorge began to be invited to radio and television, where he spoke with his own programs. Once a friend advised him to start writing books so that as many people as possible could get acquainted with his advice and find a way out of difficult life situations. So the first book on popular psychology was born.
Even after his works became known throughout the world, Jorge does not consider himself a writer. First of all, he is a doctor with extensive practical experience. Writing is like a game to him. And he involves his readers in this game, giving them the wise advice so necessary in everyone’s life. Many books compare his books with psychotherapy sessions, and literary critics called Bukai "a professional comforter."
He is currently not involved in medical activities. He devotes most of his time to writing new books, conducting lectures, conferences and meetings with readers.
Jorge won the Spanish Literary Prize for the novel Candidate. The circulation of his books published in the world exceeds two million copies.
