From the biography of Lyudmila Ulitskaya
Lyudmila Evgenievna Ulitskaya was born on January 21, 1943. The place of her birth was the village of Davlekanovo in the Urals. Lyudmila was born in a family of evacuated Muscovites. Her father was a doctor of technical sciences, he became the author of works on mechanics and agriculture. Mom at one time worked at the Research Institute of Pediatrics.
At the end of the war, the family returned to the capital. Here Ulitskaya graduated from high school and became a student at Moscow State University, choosing the Faculty of Biology. Biology classes taught Lyudmila to observe, compare facts and draw conclusions.
Having received higher education in 1968, Ulitskaya worked for two years at the Institute of General Genetics. Then she was caught reprinting banned publications. Lyudmila had to leave work.
In search of a place to earn money, Lyudmila met with people who worked in the Jewish Theater. She was offered the job of writing essays, children's plays, dramatizations, and reviews. In the theater, Lyudmila worked for about three years. It was during this period that she seriously became interested in literary work.
