Year flies fast, day after day, month after month. The usual division into seasons, and seasons into months. But a year can be broken up at other time intervals.
The word "quarter" is borrowed from the German language (quartal), which is formed from the Latin quārtā - the fourth part, a quarter.
There are 12 months in a year, which are usually divided into four seasons - winter, spring, summer and autumn. However, quarterly division is different.
When dividing a year into quarters, its times do not matter. It is worth noting that there are no gaps between the blocks.
It is also worth paying attention to the stress, which falls on the second "a": quarter. Sometimes you can hear a different pronunciation of the word with emphasis on the first vowel. This is how accountants can pronounce, explaining that they want to distinguish the significance of the quarter as a quarter of a year from the value as part of the city.
Division into quarters
Division of the year into quarters is a division into four equal time intervals. Thus, each quarter represents three months. The first quarter starts on the first of January and lasts until March 31. The second quarter is the period from April 1 to June 30, the third - from August 1 to October 31, and the last quarter - from November 1 to December 31. To indicate the quarters of the year, Roman numerals are used: I, II, III and IV quarters. The length of the quarters is different and varies from 90 to 92 days.
Today we use the Gregorian calendar, which from the point of view of astronomy is quite accurate. However, it is not the first decade that speaks of his reform in order to regroup the days of the year. In this case, it would be possible to compare the length of months, quarters and six months and correct the fact that a week starts in one month and ends in another.
In 1923, a special committee on reform issues under the League of Nations was created, and after the Second World War, this problem began to be discussed in the UN Economic and Social Council. With all the number of draft calendars, the main attention is paid to the option proposed by Gustave Armelin in 1888. According to his project, in the calendar year 12 months, as now, the year is divided into 4 quarters of 91 days. In the first month, 31 days, in the other two - 30. The first day of the year and quarter is Sunday, each quarter ends on Saturday and contains 13 weeks.
The draft calendar was approved in the USSR, France, India, Yugoslavia and several other countries. However, the UN General Assembly deferred its consideration and approval, currently ceasing activities on this issue.
