The future theater and film actor was born in Samara on June 24, 1914. Gregory came from a working-class family, which in 1929 moved to Leningrad. Here, Spiegel Sr. got a job as a foreman at a dyeing factory. At the end of the school, Gregory also went to work there.
In 1934, Gregory went to Moscow, where he enrolled at the Central College of Amateur Theater in the directing department. Two years later, the school was reorganized. Spiegel transferred to an acting school that existed at Mosfilm, which he graduated in 1940.
