The most famous killers are usually those who commit the most atrocious and brutal crimes, usually repeatedly repeated. Such maniacs were the English Jack the Ripper, who was never found, and the Soviet killer Chikatilo. Many killers become famous if celebrities become their victims.

Jack the ripper
Jack the Ripper is one of the most famous serial killers in the world, he is also interesting because his identity has not been established. Jack the Ripper acted in London at the end of the 19th century, killing cheap prostitutes from the slums of the English capital. As the number of victims grew, so did the confidence that one person was acting. The investigation was carried out by experienced Scotland Yard detectives, but the criminal was never caught, despite the numerous letters that arrived at the address of the London police allegedly on behalf of the maniac.
Subsequently, one of the letters was subjected to a thorough analysis, which showed that the author was most likely a woman.
Among the suspects in the murders under the pseudonym Jack the Ripper were Queen Victoria's grandson Albert Victor, a mentally ill person Aaron Kassinsky (who turned out to be just a follower of the Ripper), the wife of the royal doctor Elizabeth Williams, criminals George Chapman, Thomas Creame, William Henry Bury.
The crimes of Jack the Ripper have received great publicity not only in England but throughout the world. This maniac has become one of the most famous in the whole world, and the history of his murders has been used more than once in world cinema and literature.
Mark Chapman
Some killers become famous not because of the number of crimes and their cruelty, but because famous people became their victims. So, Mark David Chapman became famous all over the world when he shot John Lennon. This happened on the street when a talented musician with his wife returned home from a recording studio. Chapman called out to Lennon, and when he turned around, shot him several times. He was not going to hide from the scene of the crime - he sat next to him and began to read a book until the police arrived. The killer said that in this way he only wanted to become famous and assert himself, and he really achieved the first goal. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment in a maximum security prison, where he is still being held.
All petitions for clemency submitted by Chapman are rejected and cause a storm of public indignation.
