The future Kazan saint was born in 1505 in Staritsa (Tver province). From a young age he received a pious upbringing in his family. German came from the family of princes Polevoy. Christian upbringing affected the future bishop: he loved prayer and abstinence.
At the age of 25, Herman took monastic tonsure in the Joseph-Volokolamsk monastery, where he labored under the wise spiritual guidance of Hegumen Gury, who later became Archbishop of Kazan. For his pious life and special spiritual wisdom, Herman was appointed Archimandrite of the Assumption Monastery (Tver province). This event occurred in 1551. Soon, Herman returned to his spiritual master.
In 1555, Gury was appointed archbishop to Kazan and he was entrusted with the establishment of a monastic monastery in Sviyazhsk to plant the Orthodox faith. St. Gurius called himself to help Herman. The latter worked hard to preach the Christian faith.
After the death of St. Guri, the follower of the saint (Archimandrite Herman) was appointed archbishop in the city of Kazan. Saint German was not at the Kazan department for long, but he left a memory of the great archpastor and prayer book for the Russian people.
From the life of St. Herman it is known that he was one of the candidates for the post of Moscow Metropolitan. After the abdication of the department in 1566, Metropolitan Athanasius, St. Herman was summoned to Moscow. There, the righteous began to denounce Tsar John the Terrible and began to admonish the ruler in Christian life. Seeing this severity of the saint, the tsar decided not to put Saint German into the Metropolitan of Moscow. Soon St. Herman passed away. This happened in 1567 in Moscow. The body of the archpastor was buried in the St. Nicholas-Mokren Church, and in 1965, at the request of the inhabitants of Sviyazhsk, the imperishable relics of the righteous were transferred to his hometown.
The Orthodox Church commemorates the great ascetic of piety on the day of his death - November 19, according to a new style.
