Mountain name
In the western part of the capital there is a gentle hill. In ancient times, travelers came here to inspect the city from a height, leaving, it was also customary to climb the mountain and bow to the hospitable refuge of travelers. And this hill got the name Poklonnaya Gora. This name is found in chronicles from the 16th century.
Poklonnaya Gora is located on the Smolensk Road, which is associated with a considerable number of historical events. Here Napoleon stood waiting for the keys to Moscow, along this road our soldiers went to military operations during the Second World War.
Many historians also believe that the mountain acquired its name due to the fact that it was on it that high-ranking foreign guests were greeted by Russians with bows. Perhaps this is precisely the fact that prompted Napoleon to wait for the keys to the capital of our country at this important place.
There is another point of view on the origin of the name. It is believed that in feudal Russia the word "bow" meant a temporary payment for a period of stay on Russian territory. The bribes were located precisely on the hill, from where all the roads leading to the city were visible.
