The Biennale (which is translated from Italian as “biennial, ” that is, a biennial exhibition) of contemporary art in the capital was developed in 2003 as part of the federal target program “Culture of Russia. 2001-2006.”. And now it is considered one of the important traditional events in the cultural life of Russia.

The first Moscow Biennale was held from January 28 to February 28, 2005. The main exhibition, entitled "The Dialectic of Hope, " included the work of 41 artists from 22 states. The main project was supplemented by special programs dedicated to various areas in contemporary art of different countries.
The second biennale, which was held from March 1 to April 1, 2007, was already considered the largest international forum of artists. The works of almost a hundred authors were presented. The third and fourth biennials were held in the capital with the same success. And here comes the fifth biennial exhibition of contemporary art in Moscow.
At the beginning of 2012, an expert council was formed, which dealt with the applications of candidates for the post of curator of the fifth Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art. The expert council included world-famous art critics and art critics. In the spring, a meeting of the Supervisory Board of the Moscow Biennale took place. At the meeting, the results of the fourth biennale of the capital were summed up and discussions began on the organization of the fifth Moscow Biennale, which will be held in 2013.
At the end of May 2012, the curator of the fifth Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art was elected. The Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, taking into account the recommendations of the expert council, approved the candidacy of Catherine de Seger, curator of many large exhibitions (including the New York Museum of Modern Art and the Tapies Foundation in Barcelona), editor, critic, art director of the Sydney Biennale 2012. This fall the venues of the fifth Moscow Biennale will become known. Among the regular participants are such exhibition halls as Regina, XL, Paperworks, Fine Art, Vera Pogodina’s gallery, etc.
