Angela Bassett was born on August 16, 1958 in a poor Negro family. Parents lived in the infamous New York area called Harlem. Father often drank and sat out of work. Mother had to go out of her way to bring a few dollars to the house. The child was taken for a while by her aunt, father's sister. She worked a lot with the girl to arouse her interest in learning. She took her to the cinema and to theater performances.
At seven, Angela went to school. She studied well. She was fond of sports. In high school she attended a drama studio. Several times participated in productions that were staged on the school stage. Her favorite subject was literature and history. After school, she gained determination and entered the famous university of Yale.
Professional activity
In 1983, Bassett completed her education with two degrees - a bachelor of history and a master of fine arts. After that, Angela returned to her native New York, but did not work as a teacher, although her father insisted. Instead, she found a place in some kind of freelance theater. The artistic career took shape gradually, without take-offs, but also without breakdowns. Until the beginning of the 90s, she was invited to act in films in the supporting roles and in short episodes.
Bassett gradually gained performing experience, and she began to notice the audience and critics. The first prominent role she played in the series "Jackson: The American Dream." Proposals began to arrive with enviable regularity. A landmark for Angela was the film "What Love Is capable of." In the picture, she presented the cult American singer Tina Turner. The actress was awarded the prize "For Best Actress". Bassett was the first black performer to receive this award.
