early years
Serzh Sargsyan was born in 1954 in the capital of Nagorno-Karabakh. After graduation, he served in the Soviet Army, then worked as a turner at an electromechanical plant. At the same time he was educated at the University of Yerevan. A certified philologist went to work in the city committee of the Komsomol, then continued his career through the party.

In 1988, while holding a position in the regional party committee, Sargsyan led the movement for the annexation of Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia. Countrymen elected him a delegate to the first congress of autonomy, and a year later Serzh Azatovich received a deputy mandate of the Supreme Council of Armenia. Thus began his ascent to the political Olympus. At the very beginning of the formation of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, he was responsible for defense issues. Under his command, the army showed itself perfectly in the settlements of Kelbajar, Khojaly and Shusha. By 1995, Serge headed the military department of Armenia, his skillful leadership allowed to reach an agreement on a truce between the NKR and Azerbaijan. The following years, the politician led the security affairs and the Ministry of the Interior.
Further steps along the career ladder invariably led Sargsyan to the top of power. He led the administration of President Robert Kocharian and led the work in the Security Council of Armenia. 2007 was a turning point for the politician. The Republican Party called him its leader, and this helped her get a third of the seats in the National Assembly. Until 2008, the politician headed the government of the republic, after which the current head announced that he saw him as his successor.
As president
In 2008, Sargsyan became the president of Armenia, just over half of the country's voters voted for him. His assumption of office was accompanied by mass protests by the opposition in Yerevan. In the capital, even had to impose a state of emergency in order to conduct an inauguration.
During the reign of Sargsyan, significant changes have been outlined in the foreign policy of the state. Relations with Azerbaijan and Turkey improved significantly. In 2011, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev visited the country. The visit resulted in an agreement on the deployment of a Russian military base in Gyumri. The party headed by the president achieved unprecedented success, having received 44% of the seats in parliament. He himself in the repeat presidential election received 58% of the vote. In the last years of his reign, he held a constitutional referendum, as a result of which Armenia became a parliamentary republic.
