Before the war, in 1940, the family moved to the famous city of Brest. When hostilities began, the father died in the very first days. Mother and eldest son had to take care of the house on their shoulders. In the summer, Sergey worked in the garden. I tried by any means to find additional work and bring a pretty penny to the house. In 1954, Makarenko graduated from high school, received secondary education and was immediately drafted into the army. In service, he got stronger. Joined in sports. The metal disk also ran well. Returning to the civilian, he got a job on a self-propelled barge, which cruised along the Mukhavets River.

At the championship of the Republic of Belarus among single boats, he showed a second result at a distance of five kilometers. The following year, the coaches considered it necessary to form a crew for a double canoe consisting of Sergey Makarenko and Leonid Geishtor. The tandem has developed strong. At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, they won gold medals at a distance of 1000 meters.
Sergey’s sports career was quite successful. For three years, the famous duet from Belarus on the European continent was not equal. Their "crown" distances were 1000 and 10000 meters. A few years later the crew for objective reasons broke up. In 1966, Sergey Makarenko completed his sports career and moved to a coaching position.
