Golda Meir, the future politician of Israel, was born in Kiev on May 3, 1898 in a large Jewish family. The time was tense and very turbulent. The Golda family was constantly afraid of pogroms. In search of a more relaxed atmosphere, the family moved to relatives in the Belarusian city of Pinsk. Then the girl’s father went to work in the United States. Following him, the whole family moved to Milwaukee.
Already in the first grades of the school, Golda showed her leadership qualities and a penchant for the humanities. Together with her friend, she raised funds to buy textbooks for needy students.
Golda attended school with great enthusiasm. However, the mother did not encourage her daughter's desire for knowledge. She believed that Golda should first of all think about the upcoming marriage, and men do not like women too smart.
When Golda realized that there was no escape from her mother’s obsessive exhortations, she simply fled from her home, moving to Denver to her older sister. Here she met an educated and interesting young man - Maurice Meyerson. In 1917 they got married.
In search of a better life
Golda for many years nurtured the idea of creating a national House for the Jews. To implement the daring plan, it took to go to Palestine. These are young spouses and made in 1921. Arriving in Tell Aviv, Golda and her husband turned to the agricultural community for a reception. It was difficult to live in a new place; I had to work hard and hard. Golda soon became seriously ill. The husband insisted that they move to Jerusalem. After some time, the couple gave birth to a son Menachem and a daughter Sarah.
The young mother received one of her first public posts, becoming the secretary of the women's council of the workers' union. She makes a business trip to the United States, where she hoped to get the support of wealthy Jews. However, the moneybags were in no hurry to provide financial assistance to Palestinian Jews.
When World War II broke out, Golda made a lot of efforts to obtain permission for American Jews to move from Europe to America. At the end of November 1947, the UN decided to divide Palestine into two independent states. The state of Israel appeared on the world map. The United States was the first to recognize it, followed by the Soviet Union. Golda Meir was appointed Israeli ambassador to the USSR.
