More than a hundred films have been made based on the works of Stephen King. He repeatedly participated in the filming as a screenwriter, actor, producer and director. At the moment, the writer is the most filmed author of our time. Here are some of his most striking works.
Screen adaptations of works
"Carrie" 1976 - King's first film adaptation. The film tells about a quiet, notorious high school student who suddenly has the gift of telekinesis. The daily bullying of classmates and the attacks of a strict religious mother, who considers Carrie's abilities a sign of obsession with the devil, leads to a terrible outcome. An amazing combination of sentimentality and bloody cruelty in one picture. There are also later versions of the book: 2002 ("Carrie") and 2013 ("Telekinesis").
The 1980 Shine directed by Stanley Kubrick - despite many negative reviews from critics, including Stephen King himself, the film is recognized as one of the greatest films in history. The plot has big differences with the novel: the main character gets a job as a caretaker in a secluded hotel in the mountains and moves there with his family. However, life there soon becomes a nightmare. Weird dreams begin to torment Jack and his son, and the hotel is slowly driving its residents crazy. Communication with the outside world is impossible - all roads are blocked by snowdrifts. And only the "radiance" is able to lead everyone out of the approaching darkness
.In 1997, a series was released for this work, in which, according to King, the shortcomings and discrepancies with the novel that took place in the film adaptation of Kubrick were corrected.
"Dolores Claiborne" in 1995 - undeservedly left unattended by the press and not having success at the box office - is one of the best screen versions of King's works. A psychologically deep picture of a woman who killed her husband in order to protect her daughter. The image of Dolores Claiborne, complex and multifaceted, was perfectly managed to convey to the actress Katie Bates, who struck the writer with the game in the movie Misery.
"Escape from the Shawshank" 1994 - the rights to the film adaptation were sold for only $ 1 due to the author’s initial skepticism about this idea. However, subsequently, the film, considered a classic of the psychological thriller, became one of King's favorite paintings in his works. Seven Oscar nominations, worldwide fame and leadership in all sorts of ratings for "Best Movies of All Time".
Before filming, the prison was in such an unsightly condition that a lot of money was spent on bringing it back to normal.
"1408" 2007 - the film permeates the atmosphere of horror and madness, devouring a person from the inside. A paranormal writer arrives at the Dolphin Hotel and rents room 1408 because the mysterious deaths of 56 guests occurred there. Initially, the hero’s skepticism about otherworldly forces soon changes, as a nightmare begins to happen before his eyes, which can not be described. Director Michael Hofström was one of the few who managed to convey all the horrors of King's prose.
"It" in 1990 - deserves special mention even for the frightening image of the clown Pennywise, which has been remembered by many viewers since childhood. In the film adaptation, many moments of the novel of the same name are omitted, therefore, fans of the writer's work are better, nevertheless, to get acquainted with the voluminous work in print.
