The future Russian boxer was born on April 2, 1983. His homeland is the city of Kopeisk, in the southern Urals. From a young age, Sergey was fond of sports. He began boxing at the age of eleven.
Kovalev's debut in big sport was his performance at the Russian Amateur Championship in 1997. He won the “gold” in the middle weight category in the youth group.

As part of the youth team, Sergey took part in the European Championship. The athlete twice in 2000-2001 became the finalist of the national championships among young men.
Successful for Sergey was his performance at the Olympic Hopes winter championships in 2002 and 2003: competing with athletes 19-22 years old, Kovalev became a finalist.
The debut at the “adult” championship of Russia for Sergey took place in 2004. Here he won the team championship. And a year later, Kovalev won the national championship.

Kovalev and professional boxing
In 2009, Kovalev moved from amateur to professional. In the professional ring, he first performed in the United States. He completed the first nine fights with victories in the first and second rounds.
Achievements of a talented boxer allowed him in 2011 to fight for the champion title according to the North American Boxing Association. Speaking against Kenyan Douglas Otieno, Kovalev laid his opponent in the first minute and opened the account with prestigious championship belts.
But in a duel with the American Grover Young Kovalev failed to win. In this battle, held in the summer of 2011, the winner was not determined. After a powerful blow from Sergei, the American was injured and could not continue the fight, the result was a technical draw.
In December 2011, a fight took place between Kovalev and Roman Simakov, the WBC Asian champion. The meeting ended tragically: after the fight, Sergei's rival fell into a coma and soon died in the clinic, without regaining consciousness. KO Kovalev was awarded a victory by technical knockout. Sergei was very worried about the death of a fellow in the ring. The money earned for his next battle, he transferred to the Simakov family.
