From the biography of Kirill Pletnev
The future actor and director was born on December 30, 1979 in Kharkov (Ukraine). Shortly after the birth of Cyril, his parents moved to Leningrad. Cyril has a younger brother Michael. Pletnev’s father was an engineer and inventor, my mother worked as a dance teacher. Cyril helped his mother to conduct ballroom dance competitions.
Cyril was 13 years old when his father left the family. More with children Pletnev Sr. did not see. Sons were raised by mother. She instilled in them a love of sport and taught them how to achieve their goals, no matter how difficult they may seem at first glance.
In school years, Cyril was going to become a professional athlete. He went to a tourist club, engaged in swimming, taekwondo. Cyril also attended a specialized football section, although he really didn’t really like this game, as is recognized in an interview.
The actor told reporters that in his youth he was ruffy, bold and pugnacious. I read a lot, was fond of poetry. And even he tried to write poetry. He loved walking alone. And after the ninth grade he became interested in theater.
Kirill graduated from high school at the school with a theatrical bias: he managed to convince his mother that this direction corresponds to his inclinations. The specialization of the class was theatrical criticism. However, Pletnev did not want to become a critic. Not too attracted to him and the career of an actor. Most of all, Pletnev wanted to be a director. In the graduating class, Pletnev even wrote an essay, where he substantiated his choice and wrote why he was interested in stage art.
In 1996, Cyril made an attempt to enter the directing department of the St. Petersburg Theater Academy. But failed. He was considered not mature enough for the profession of director and was recommended to enter the acting department. Cyril did just that.
In his student years, Pletnev participated in several serious theatrical productions. Gradually, Cyril realized that he could embody creative ideas not only in the director's chair, but also on the stage, creating diverse roles.
Theatrical career of Kirill Pletnev
In 2000, Pletnev graduated. He had to decide on the place of work. However, there was no admission to local theaters. Cyril decided to try his luck in the capital of Russia. Jobs were in the DzhT Armen Armen Dzhigarkhanyan, in the theater of Alexander Kalyagin and in the "School of modern play" by Joseph Reichelgauz. Pletnev, after reflection, chose the troupe of Dzhigarkhanyan, where he worked in the next three seasons. He was busy in The Tales of the Scientist Cat, in The Examiner. And then, according to Pletnev himself, he was kicked out.
The actor admitted that after graduation, his ideas about how the creative process was organized in theaters were very far from reality. For example, it was extremely difficult for Pletnev to rehearse roles and play in productions that he did not like. Therefore, Cyril is even grateful to the director for the decision to dismiss the intractable actor.
Since 2003, Pletnev for some time collaborated with the director Irina Keruchenko. It was comfortable to work: they were united by uniform principles of elaboration of artistic images, which made it possible to take into account the complex and contradictory motivation of the heroes of works. Here are just some of the productions of those years in which Kirill Pletnev took part:
- "Phantom pains";
- Gedda Gabler;
- "I am a machine gunner."

When Pletnev had the opportunity to choose roles from a variety of proposals from directors, he decided to prove to everyone and to himself that he was able to go beyond the usual role. Cyril more than once had to abandon those scenarios that were not sufficiently developed.
The actor admits that he would love to play in those films that require him to deeply transform. In this sense, Pletnev considers Robert de Niro a model for himself.
