New year holidays
Of course, the most famous in Russia are such traditional holidays as New and Old New Years. New Year begins on January 1 and is celebrated not only in the Russian Federation, but also in almost all countries of the world. The Old New Year is a conditional holiday that exists only in the territory of the post-Soviet space, which arose as a result of the change in the Julian calendar, which was used in the Russian Empire by the Gregorian. It is celebrated on the night of January 13-14.
Religious holidays
The most important religious January holidays are Orthodox Christmas, Baptism, Circumcision, Catholic Epiphany. There are also certain holidays that “float” depending on the lunar calendar. These include the Buddhist New Year - Sagaalgan, the day preceding the ritual cleansing of Dugjuub, as well as one of the main Muslim holidays, Mawlid al-Nabi (the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad).
In January, one of the favorite holidays of Russian youth is celebrated - Tatyana’s Day. January 25th is Students' Day since 1755, when Empress Elizabeth signed a decree establishing Moscow University. Since 2005, Tatyana’s Day has been officially identified with Student’s Day, thanks to special decree No. 76 “On the Day of Russian Students”.
