Instruction manual
1
Watch the movie. Do not make any special notes during the first viewing. Look like an ordinary viewer. Try to catch the general meaning of the film. After the first viewing you should understand what this film is about. The theme, the plot, how the main storyline ends - everything that becomes clear after viewing to the ordinary viewer should also become clear to you.
2
Watch the movie a second time. Now you can start the translation. Translate from the first scene. If you meet any new words or phrases, stop browsing, look up the meaning in the dictionary. You can write out all difficult cases on a separate sheet of paper. New knowledge will come in handy not only for this translation, but also for further work.
3
In parallel to the “cost-effective” translation, type the Russian translation on a computer or write down by hand (as you prefer). It is best to do this immediately in electronic form. It will be convenient if in the future you want to make subtitles for the film - you will already have an electronic version of the translation ready.
4
Make sure that the articulation of the actors matches the articulation of the translated phrase. If the phrase sounds short in a foreign language, try to choose a Russian counterpart - a short phrase that matches the meaning. This is especially important when you are planning to record the Russian translation yourself on top of the original soundtrack or to do simultaneous translation during the film screening.
5
Show the draft translation to colleagues or acquaintances who speak a foreign language sufficiently. Discuss the pros and cons of your translation with them. Remember that your task, without distorting the meaning, is to convey to the viewer not only the content of the film, but also the spirit of a particular film production.
6
Translate comedy only if you are fluent in the language. Transferring a joke from one language to another, while preserving its severity, is not an easy task even for translation masters. Consult with older colleagues on how to translate a particular cue better.
note
Be careful using foul language in your translation. Even if mats are found in the original text, they can always be replaced with literary words and expressions.
Focus on the target audience. If you are making a translation of a movie that children will watch, please refrain from using foul language.
Helpful advice
Make sure that your translation meets the requirements of the Russian literary language. To do this, consult not only in matters of translation, but also find an expert in the field of the Russian language. For example, you can ask a friend from a university or school for help.
