The policy of compulsory medical insurance (MHI) allows anyone to receive immediate or planned medical care for free throughout the Russian Federation. This happens due to financing the activities of doctors from compulsory health insurance funds. An expired MHI policy is considered invalid and requires an urgent extension.

Contact your HR team at your place of work (if you work). Bring your expired MHI policy and passport. You will be asked to write a request for exchange of the document. After a short period of time you will be issued an extended policy.

Write a renewal application to your local administration if you are unemployed, senior citizen or student. Although usually a social security or pension fund is involved in the replacement of MHI policies for pensioners, and the policy itself is brought to a person at home along with a pension. Pupils and students also in most cases change their medical policy at the place of study.

Extend the MHI policy by contacting the insurance company or branch of a company that provides you with compulsory health insurance directly. Such offices have a specific work schedule with special reception hours for working citizens and separate hours for the unemployed. Take with you a passport, a work book (if you work), a policy that needs to be renewed.

Use the services of your local employment center (if you are registered as unemployed) to facilitate the exchange of medical policies. Write the appropriate application and provide the necessary documents (passport, policy).

Contact the dean’s office if you are a student and you don’t have the opportunity to change the policy in any other way. Provide the person in charge with your documents: passport, student ID, renewal policy.

The social security will help you if you are a disabled person who receives an appropriate pension. Present your policy, disability certificate and your passport.

Go to the official website of your health insurance company (if any). Some of these companies offer the possibility of extending the compulsory medical insurance policy without visiting the office directly. You will need to fill out the appropriate form on the website and send the scanned documents to the company’s email address. The MHI policy will be delivered to you by courier, or you can get it at the office.

The maximum term for the exchange of the compulsory medical insurance policy is 1 month. During this period, you will be issued a temporary certificate of compulsory health insurance.
