The conditions for obtaining citizenship are specified in the "Law of the Russian Federation on Citizenship. In 2003, amendments were made to simplify the acquisition of citizenship for certain categories of people (for example, for those who live or resided in countries that are part of the USSR).

The procedure for granting citizenship can take place both in general and in a simplified manner. In the first case, you must submit an appropriate application. The following are entitled to it: stateless persons; competent and over 18 years old persons; Foreign citizens. Moreover, it is important that a person has lived in Russia for at least five years. Please note that a stay is considered continuous only if a person has not traveled outside the Russian Federation for a period exceeding three months a year.

A future Russian citizen is also obliged to comply with the country's legislation and its constitution, have a legitimate livelihood, and be fluent in Russian. In addition, it will be necessary to write a waiver of existing citizenship.

In some cases, the time spent in the territory of the Russian Federation can be reduced to a year. Citizens who can get this opportunity include people with high achievements in culture, technology, science, art, as well as those who have a profession of interest to the Russian Federation. Obtaining citizenship in a shorter time is also possible for persons who have received political asylum.

Stateless persons and foreigners are entitled to apply for citizenship in a simplified manner (but at least one of their parents must be a citizen of the Russian Federation living in the country). Persons who possessed USSR citizenship, reside or lived on the territory of the former republics of the Soviet Union also fall into this category.

Obtaining Russian citizenship is also provided for persons who have graduated from higher or secondary special institutions of the Russian Federation. However, there is a condition under which these persons must be citizens of the states that were part of the USSR, and at the same time received education later than July 1, 2002.
