Instruction manual
1
Select a book written in simple language (for example, literature for children) or adapted for a Russian reader to translate from English for the first time. You can also use those books that have already been read in Russian. In this case, translation from English will be easier, because You will already know the topic and understand the meaning of the story.
2
Translate text with paragraphs. In the read, highlight the subject and predicate, determine how they relate to each other. Find out in what temporary form the verb is in order to correctly understand the meaning of the text. Do not be lazy to consult the grammar guide, especially at the initial stage.
3
Write new words in a separate notebook and try to remember them. Firstly, this way you will effectively replenish your vocabulary. Secondly, meeting this word in the future, avoid the need to look for it in the dictionary.
4
Remember that your main tasks are to understand the contents of the book and replenish the vocabulary. At first, it will be necessary to check with the dictionary almost every word. But it’s better not to get carried away. Kato Lomb, author of 16 Languages, a book in How I Learn Languages, warned against digging into the dictionary too much. She said that if a word is really important, then it will be repeated again and again. And it must be translated and memorized without fail.
5
Beware of the vocabulary analogy. These are peculiar traps when the English word very strongly resembles the Russian pronunciation. In this case, the novice reader thinks that it means the same as in the native language. Be sure to check the dictionary.
6
Try often not to use online services to translate phrases and sentences. This is especially dangerous if you are still not very good at grammar of the language. It is better to resort to the help of such translators for translating individual words so as not to search for them in a paper analog for a long time. But be careful: online dictionaries do not always offer a complete list of word meanings, and rarely give a transcription of it.
7
Read and translate books from English with a pencil in hand. If the book belongs to you, make the necessary notes in the margins, sign the meaning of the word directly above it. This is called "work with text." Each time, sitting down again at the book, glance over the pages already read.
Useful advice
For translation and reading, choose books that are of interest to you. If you do not like novels, then studying them will become flour. The text and the plot should capture you and make you want to know the continuation.
