Most European countries use the names of the months of the Julian calendar. Ukrainian names are closely connected with the life of the people, popular observations and signs.

This name was given the first month of the year thanks to the custom of chopping, cutting (sіkti) trees, preparing land for sowing. Previously, there were other names for January: jelly, snow, triskun, lyutovy, burned, prosinets.
