Instruction manual
1
Gather the maximum amount of information about a deceased relative. In addition to his full name, his date and place of birth, the name of the area from which he was drafted, the number of the military unit in which he served, or at least the type of troops, the time he leaves for service and death or missing him, may come in handy.
2
Start your search with online resources. To search for those who died in the Great Patriotic War back in Soviet times, the "Book of Memory" was created. In the 2000s, it was digitized, and now search on it is possible through the website of the Memorial society -
3
In the "Search" menu, specify the name, surname and patronymic of a relative, and, if known, the date and place of birth. The system will give you a list of names among which you can find the right person. From the information card you can find out the date and place of death, the cause of death, and in some cases the place of burial. There are similar online lists of those killed in local conflicts. For example, information about the victims of the war in Afghanistan can be found at
4
If the Internet does not have all the answers to your questions, contact the archive, for example, the Russian State Military Archive - http://www.rusarchives.ru/federal/rgva/index.shtml There, at your request, they will be able to issue a certificate of interest to you relative and information about the burial place, if known. The request can be transmitted both during a personal visit to the institution, and send by mail. But be prepared for the fact that the results will have to wait long enough.
5
To search for those who died in World War II, contact one of the search squads, for example, the one presented on the website http://www.poisk-pobeda.ru/index.php. These organizations consist of groups of enthusiasts conducting excavations at battlefields and engaged in the reburial and identification of dead soldiers. Perhaps among the victims of the war they found would be a wanted relative.
