Instruction manual
1
Search online. It is very convenient, fast and efficient.
2
You should know for sure that they (relatives or your friends) are there (abroad).
3
Use English. Foreign ownership is an important condition for finding people abroad.
4
To make a request on the Internet, you need to know very precisely who you are looking for, when and under what conditions a person went abroad, in what year it happened, at what age he was, and whether he is alive at the moment. Trying to search for relatives at random is a thoughtless and senseless undertaking.
5
When searching for people abroad, knowing the surname and name, place on sites or bulletin boards not only all kinds of spellings of this surname, but also abbreviations. The most common way to spell Russian surnames in English is transcription, when the letters of the Russian alphabet are written in letters or combinations of letters in another language. Moreover, transcription into English is different from transcription into French or German.
6
Write a letter of appeal where you tell your story, all the information you know, post it on genealogy resources, websites, message boards and regularly update it. In the West, they are very careful about the family and everything that is connected with it, so foreigners respect this search. Many will actively participate in correspondence and provide assistance.
7
Explore archives. This is a more complicated search for people who moved abroad a long time ago. The United States has an archive of documents dating back to 1820. The order of registration of arrivals has changed repeatedly during this period, many lists are lost or burned out during a fire, but, nevertheless, 90% of the lists of emigrants are stored in the archives of the United States and are called Immigration Passenger Lists. They indicate the name of each passenger, place of birth (country and city), date of arrival, family composition, destination, age, gender, profession, purpose of arrival in the United States.
8
Still, look for a start in Russia. In our country, there are special services that deal with the return of emigration archives from abroad to their homeland - these are the Federal Archival Service, libraries and museums.
