The sacrament of baptism is a rite in which a person seems to be reborn into a new spiritual life and with a new Orthodox name. This name is given to him in the glory of one of the saints, it is contained in the Saints and is "written in heaven." The saint, by whose name they will call a man, will protect him, being for him the heavenly patron. People who are completely ignorant of religious issues may wonder what name to choose when they baptize their child and themselves.

Instruction manual
1
Choose an Orthodox name for yourself or your child, guided by certain rules. If the name that was given to the child at birth is in Saints, then usually it is given to the child at baptism. There are names in Saints that were once worn by saints.
2
Moreover, it was earlier customary at the time of birth to name a child in the name of that saint, on the day of whose memory he was born. For girls, a slight “shift” in choosing a name was allowed. This was done because the days of remembrance of holy wives are somewhat less frequent than holy husbands. But at baptism a person received a different name.
3
Some names, for example, Georgian or Serbian saints, are not in our Saints. Despite this, their names can be given at baptism, because they are adapted to another language variants of the names available in the Saints. If your name or the name of your child is one, take it at baptism.
4
In addition to the presence of the name in Saints, the day of remembrance of the saint who bore him should be celebrated in the interval from the day the child is born until the eighth day of his life. Today, the "rule of seven days" is no longer mandatory when choosing an Orthodox name, so observe it only if you wish.
5
A person receives a new name after going through the baptismal rite, during which the priest reads the prayer three times, calls the Holy Spirit three times, sanctifies the water and dips the baby there. Adults are simply sprayed with blessed water. On the forehead of a baptized person, the priest applies a drop of myrrh oil. It is when immersed in water that a person dies, as it were, and then is born to a new spiritual life, receiving at the same time a new Orthodox name. Anointing means the blessing of the Lord.
6
If a person has forgotten the name that he was named at baptism, he cannot be baptized again, but he must repent, partake of the sacrament and ask the priest to take another Orthodox name for himself. It can be chosen from the names present in the Saints, so that it is consonant with the passport option. You can also ask for blessings in order to take for yourself the name of that saint whose deeds and life left a mark on your soul.
7
Sometimes, according to a vow, a child at baptism is given the name of a saint who was prayed before he was born.
note
Throughout the year, the days of remembrance of many saints are repeated. The child's name will be considered the next day in memory of the saint after his birthday.
