The popular saying that they are greeted by clothes did not arise by chance. In olden times, a lot could be identified by a costume - a country, a province, a county, and even villages. In addition, the presence or absence of certain items of clothing indicated the age and social status of a person. Ukrainian children's costume is very similar to an adult, but still has some differences.
Embroidery
Perhaps the most characteristic feature of the Ukrainian costume, both for children and for adults, is an embroidered shirt. Embroidery was worn by both boys and girls. Such a shirt is sewn of their rectangular details of the front, back and sleeves. The shirt is richly decorated with embroidery. True, children's embroideries look somewhat more modest than adults, but still they are embroidered on the shelf and sleeves. As a rule, embroidery is done separately, and then sewn to the shirt. For a children's carnival costume, embroidery can be replaced with a wide braid that matches the style. An adult female or girlish shirt is done with a gusset. In the manufacture of Ukrainian clothes for girls, this detail can be dispensed with. A denim corset is worn on the shirt. You can sew it, for example from velvet.
Modern children's Ukrainian shirts do not always sew according to old patterns. For a girl, it may just be an embroidered blouse made of thin natural fabric.
Skirt and apron
In the old days, Ukrainian girls, girls and women wore ponev. Now in a children's suit, she is perfectly replaced by a straight skirt made of thick fabric, preferably in a large cage. The skirt for the girl should be up to the knee or a little higher. A white apron with beautiful embroidery is worn over the poneva. Girls (and boys) put on boots on a small heel on their feet. The boots were most often red, to the middle of the calf.
Details of the Ukrainian costume were often embroidered with a cross. In some regions, the surface was the most popular type of embroidery.
Headdress
The most characteristic detail of a girl’s Ukrainian folk costume is a hat. This is a luxurious half wreath with ribbons. Girls of marriageable age made magnificent wreaths reminiscent of a crown. A little girl's headdress was usually more modest. To make a half-wreath, you need a narrow elastic band, artificial flowers with wire stems (or flowers made of fabric without stems at all), satin ribbons. Cut the tapes in identical pieces 30-50 cm long. On one side, cut the cut with a “fork” or a corner. Sew elastic in a ring. Attach the flowers. Sew the ribbons with the satin side up, folding their straight short edges.
