It is interesting that Elena Hanga herself cannot unambiguously indicate her nationality. Her genealogical roots are so intricately intertwined that it is easier to recognize a woman as "Russian" than as a representative of any other nation. A native of Zanzib (father), who spent only four months as prime minister of the republic and subsequently died in prison when Yelena was only two years old, was replaced by Lee Young, an African-American who now lives in Los Angeles.
Elena's mother - Lia Oliverovna Golden - is a native of Tashkent, in whom her father was an African American and her mother is Jewish with a Polish pedigree. The Golden family arrived in the USSR in 1931, having emigrated from the USA. It is noteworthy that Lia Golden, being a scientist in the field of history and a professor at the University of Chicago, was a friend of Svetlana Alliluyeva, and during her studies at Moscow State University, she lived in a dormitory with the Gorbachev couple.
And the mother and grandmother on the maternal side were engaged in the upbringing of the future journalist, which is why Elena is fluent in English. This allowed her to perfectly graduate from high school with an in-depth study of foreign language and to enter the journalism department at Moscow State University without any problems.
