In 2012, the EXPO exhibition takes place in the South Korean city of Esu, chosen back in 2007. Theme of the exhibition: "Living Ocean and Coastal Zone: Diversity of Resources and Their Rational Use". The opening ceremony was held on May 11 and was accompanied by laser special effects and fireworks.
The Russian pavilion is traditionally one of the largest and most visited. The motto of Russia at the exhibition: "The Ocean and Man - The Way from the Past to the Future." On this basis, the Russian exposition is represented by several main areas: the history of the development of the ocean, its modern use and the harmonious interaction of man and the ocean.
As part of the exposition, Russia presented many interesting topics and developments. So, the state corporation Rosatom has proposed a floating nuclear power plant project. The company JSC RusHydro showed developments dedicated to the use of the energy of oceanic tides and waves. The unique research of Lake Vostok in Antarctica is described by the FSBI “Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute” exposition. Researchers managed to get water from a lake located under a four-kilometer ice shell. Dozens of Russian enterprises and research institutes acquaint visitors with their unique developments.
The theme of the exhibition is selected taking into account the ever-increasing importance of water resources in human life. The depletion of the world's oceans has already led to the fact that traditional fishing areas do not allow to obtain high catches of fish, characteristic of the last century. Many countries face severe freshwater shortages. Pollution of the seas and oceans has led to a threatening nature, and natural cleaning mechanisms can no longer cope with the consequences of an increasing human impact on aquatic ecosystems.
During the exhibition, several scientific symposia are held. In particular, issues related to global warming and fisheries issues are being considered, and an international oceanic forum is being held. Expo 2012 closes on August 12th.
