Gained fame during the events of August 19-21, 1991 - Echo was one of the few radio stations that spoke out against the Emergency Committee in the early days. The decision of the State Emergency Committee No. 3 on the suspension of the radio station is now regarded by the leaders of the Echo as a high state award. According to Aleksey Venediktov, editor-in-chief, the security services made several attempts to disconnect the radio station from the air, but its employees managed to connect the studio with the transmitter via a telephone line and continue broadcasting. From the first day of its existence, Echo of Moscow adheres to one rule: "All significant points of view on events should be presented." Journalists jokingly call "Echo of Moscow" - "The Ear of Moscow", gossips - "Yehu of Moscow."

History
Base
House-book at 11 Novy Arbat, where the Echo of Moscow is located
In May 1990, a meeting was held at the Faculty of Journalism of Moscow State University with the participation of Dean Yasen Zasursky, Head of the Department of Television and Radio Broadcasting Georgy Kuznetsov, Heads of the Radio Association V. Buryak, G. Kliger, M. Rosenblat, Executive Secretary of the magazine Ogonyok A. Shcherbakova and S. Korzun, who was invited to head the editorial board. In May-June 1990, workshops were held in the smoking room of the Soviet Union Radio and Television Broadcasting Announcers S. Korzun and S. Buntman - developing a concept for a radically new colloquial radio station for the USSR based on the principles of free journalism, a complete lack of propaganda and brainwashing. Alexei Venediktov recalled that people who worked at the State Radio and Television were tired of lying, so they decided to do their own radio business. Initially, the founders of Ekho Moskvy as a mass media were the Moscow City Council of People's Deputies, the Radio Association, the Ogonyok magazine, and the faculty of journalism at Moscow State University.
On August 9, 1990, the registration of the radio station as mass media by the Moscow Soviet was completed on the basis of the "Law of the USSR on the Press, " which entered into force on August 1, 1990. They searched for the name of the new radio station for a long time: "Rumor", "Stalker", "Capital". At 18:57 on August 22, 1990, the radio station first aired. However, Echo traditionally celebrates its birthday a month later, when everything is in place after the summer holidays.
Chronology
The coverage of the Vilnius events of January 1991 became a baptism of fire for Echo. A few days after that, a TASS message appeared, talking about a malicious station living on American money and slandering just from under the Kremlin wall itself. Not only pressure attempts appeared on the radio station, but they really wanted to close the station.
Alexei Venediktov, chief editor of Echo of Moscow since 1998
On August 19, 1991, the broadcast was stopped by KGB officers at about half past seven in the morning, after the program host S. Korzun refused to stop the broadcast. On August 20, at 13:40, by order of the Minister of Communications of the RSFSR Vladimir Bulgak and thanks to the efforts of the Deputy Minister of Communications of the USSR A. Ivanov, people's deputies of Moscow and Russia, the transmitter was turned on.
At 22:50, communication with the transmitter again disappeared. According to some sources, this happened after the GKChP’s decision on the closure of Ekho Moskvy radio as "not conducive to stabilizing the situation." According to other sources, the wire through which the signal from the studio went to the transmitter was cut off at the request of Lubyanka. Sound engineer Vladimir Petrakov called the transmitting center and found out that technically there is no problem "connecting" a regular landline telephone to the transmitter. At about 2 a.m. on August 21, work resumed (according to Korzun, broadcasting was also carried out from 00:31 to 01:19). She was interrupted several times for the next set of numbers. Direct broadcasts from the besieged White House and the city hall began, reports and comments of guests who came to the studio went.
According to other sources, the radio station again went on air only at 03:37 on August 21. The Minister of Communications of the RSFSR ordered the operation of the Ekho Moskvy radio station and establish communication lines in addition to the channels of the Union Ministry on the basis of an order by the President of the RSFSR Yeltsin to release the media in the republic and the corresponding decision of the Presidium of the Moscow Soviet.
At 8 o’clock in the morning (according to other sources at 10:18) the Echo of Moscow was disconnected for the fourth time using the Alpha group (according to other sources, the airborne unit, whose commander introduced himself in a telephone conversation as Lt. Col. Sakharov and referred to the order of the Moscow commandant Colonel General Kalinin), who stormed the transmitter on the street. D. Poor (October Radio Center). After a couple of hours, when the tired Alpha left, another transmitter was turned on. At 15:40, due to the firm position of the leadership of the RSFSR and Moscow, the radio station again went on the air. According to the editor-in-chief of Echo of Moscow Sergey Korzun, during the absence of the radio on the air, there were attempts to discredit EM. While the broadcasting of EM was forcedly stopped, an unknown transmitter was operating on or near the frequency of the radio station, imitating the form of the Echo broadcast and broadcasting misinformation regarding the events in Moscow.
On August 20, the State Committee on the State of Emergency in the USSR, in connection with the introduction of a state of emergency on August 19, 1991 in Moscow and some other territories of the USSR and in accordance with Clause 14 of Article 4 of the USSR Law "On the Legal Regime of the State of Emergency", decided to suspend television and Russian radio, as well as the Echo of Moscow radio station, as not contributing to the process of stabilizing the situation in the country. In 2001, Yanaev for the first and last time will be a guest of the radio station.

Since 2010
According to the research company COMCON, Echo of Moscow took the first place in the ranking of Moscow radio stations in September 2010, the total number of daily listeners of the station was about 1 million people. On April 4, 2011, Alexei Venediktov was approved by the board of directors of Echo of Moscow as editor-in-chief for a three-year term. On March 14, 2014, Venediktov was confirmed as editor-in-chief for another five years.
On June 23, 2014, the ITAR-TASS news agency, citing the first deputy general director of Gazprom Media Vladimir Shemyakin, announced that the audit firm PricewaterhouseCoopers had discovered that the profit from unaccounted advertising at the radio station was lost in 2013, the holding plans to bring this issue to the nearest board of directors. The agency’s source, from the radio station’s management, said that we are talking about social advertising, considered by the auditors as commercial.
In April 2014, it became known about the intention of the Moscow authorities to reconstruct the hotels No. 11 on Novy Arbat, where the radio station is located, into hotels for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. By early July, Ekho Moskvy signed a lease on the premises of the editorial office of Moskovsky Komsomolets on 1905 Goda Street.
In early July, it became known about the plans of minority shareholders, including Alexei Venediktov, to send Gazprom Media a proposal to buy back about 66.6% of the station. The buyback offer will be presented at the shareholders meeting on July 23. According to the structure of the company, minority shareholders have a priority repurchase right. But in August, Venediktov said that following an informal meeting with Mikhail Lesin, it became known that they did not want to sell the shares belonging to the holding.
Criticism and scandals
On February 14, 2012, Gazprom-Media Holding demanded the urgent resignation of the board of directors and a change in the composition of independent directors of the radio station. The last decision concerned independent directors Yevgeny Yasin and Alexander Makovsky, who had worked in this capacity for 10 years. According to Venediktov, he and the deputy are leaving the board of directors. Editor-in-chief Vladimir Varfolomeev. In exchange, they proposed the candidacy of Yuri Fedutinov, the general director of Echo of Moscow and the Echo-TV television company.
Hillary Clinton on Echo of Moscow
Journalists of the station published a communiqué, where they expressed their bewilderment at the actions of Gazprom Media, considering it a reaction to criticism of senior officials to the radio station. In addition, it was announced that a list of new candidates for the board of directors of Echo-Moscow was approved. It includes the director general of Svyazinvest Vadim Semenov and independent entrepreneur Evgeny Trubin, the former general director of Lenizdat. The team is also going to create a Supervisory Board at the radio station, which will be headed by Yasin and Makovsky.
In this conflict, representatives of the media business spoke on the side of Echo: Natalya Sindeeva offered to buy back a stake in Echo of Moscow radio station from Gazprom Media, and Alexander Lebedev promised to provide her team with the available FM frequency. Presidential candidate and entrepreneur Mikhail Prokhorov was ready to provide a loan to buy back a stake in Gazprom Media.
Spokesman for Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin Dmitry Peskov said he considers the events to be "internal corporate affairs." Gazprom Media President Nikolai Senkevich said that this decision was influenced by "increased attention to our Echo of Moscow radio station from different sides", and explained the change of independent directors by staff rotation.
Speaking about the radio station, Mikhail Leontyev, answering the question of Ksenia Sobchak, said:
When I need to recharge with hatred, I listen to them with great pleasure. It helps me professionally.
On April 16, 2015, the Anonymous International hacker group published correspondence, allegedly belonging to the head of Roskomnadzor Alexander Zharov. It pays special attention to the correspondence of the director general of the Echo of Moscow radio station Mikhail Demin, in which he discussed polls on the website of the radio station, approval of published blogs, separate advertisements and texts, deprivation of the St. Petersburg Echo license, size of the station’s budget, and non-fulfillment of salary agreements, as well as the approval of the anti-crisis march promotional videos with the participation of Boris Nemtsov and Mikhail Kasyanov.
On December 25, 2015, the video and transcript of the broadcast of the program “Special Opinion” dated December 24, the guest of which was writer Viktor Shenderovich, were also removed from the radio station’s website, and the mention of the guest of the program from the broadcast schedule also disappeared. Shenderovich mentioned on air the publications alleging the connection between the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and crime, and also accused the authorities of the collapse of the country. The site’s editor-in-chief Vitaly Ruvinsky explained his decision with a large number of personal insults, which we try to prevent on the site.
Roskomnadzor warnings
In mid-November 2014, Roskomnadzor issued a warning to the radio station for the Do-It-Yourself broadcast on October 29, whose heroes spoke of battles for the Donetsk airport between Ukrainian forces and the DPR armed forces. On November 17, the head of the department, Alexander Zharov, explained this with a positive assessment of the Ukrainian nationalist organization "Right Sector", which, according to him, "was recognized as an extremist organization by the decision of the Prosecutor General." Information-analytical center "Sova" noted several legal and factual errors on the part of the official. Among them: The Right Sector was recognized as extremist only on November 17 a few weeks after the broadcast, Zharov’s words did not quite agree with the editorial warnings, and there was no positive response from his guests on the broadcast.
Codex
At the end of November 2014, assistant to the editor-in-chief of the radio station, Lesya Ryabtseva, announced her intention to develop a “regulation of the behavior of journalists on social networks” and in connection with this mentioned a certain “international experience”. According to her, BBC journalists are forbidden to be a subscriber, friend or follower of a politician or activist, the Associated Press (AP) has a rule: “Friendship or subscription to a political candidate’s account can create a perception among people unfamiliar with the protocol of social networks that you show your sympathy. " In fact, the BBC’s instruction on social media behavior does not contain any prohibitions on social media communication for its employees, which was also confirmed by the employees of this media, and in AP, a reminder advises you to do the exact opposite of the statement of the radio station employee.
Criticism of the radio station by Sergey Korzun and the reaction of the media community
In May 2015, one of the founders of the radio station, the first editor-in-chief, Sergey Korzun, said that he no longer worked for Ekho Moskvy, explaining this step by Lesya Ryabtseva’s publications and his reluctance to combine his publications with them on one resource. According to him, published by him on his livejornal page, "Echo of Moscow today is betraying its basic target audience … An unfiltered Echo has become dangerous for mental health." Korzun stated that the station’s website now contains “unprofessional, arrogant, vicious and simply insulting judgments” that are not related to the initial task of presenting all significant points of view.. After that, writer Boris Akunin, an economist, announced the termination of cooperation with Ekho Moskvy Konstantin Sonin and a number of bloggers.
