Carier start
On New Year's Eve, December 31, 1974, in the city of Lancaster, a boy was born who was destined to destroy the cliches and "common places" of the fantasy genre in the future and thereby become famous throughout the world. During his school years, Joe Abercrombie, by his own admission, devoted most of his time to computer games, reading science fiction, and drawing maps of non-existent lands, which made his studies go far into the background. And yet, after graduation, he managed to enter the University of Manchester, the faculty of psychology, which later, apparently, helped Joe to develop such vivid ambiguous characters, such as the Inquisitor Glockt, or the barbarian philosopher Loghen Nine-Finger.
After graduation, Joe moved to London and got a job on television, but soon left there to become a freelance video editor. Among his works are clips of Barry White, Coldplay and The Killers, concerts, award ceremonies and even TV shows. Well, Joe decided to devote his free time to the novel, which was destined to become a world bestseller.
Creation
In 2004, Joe finished the novel in the "black fantasy" genre, which received the name "Blood and Iron" in the Russian translation. The purpose of the novel, Joe set a rethinking of genre cliches, and judging by how the novel was met by the public, he did it. Inspired by success, the author writes two more novels, which became the second and third part of the trilogy, now known as the "First Law". The author himself spoke well about the content of the trilogy: "an epic mixture of war, love, magic and adrenaline."
The novels of the newly-minted literary star were twice recognized as "Books of the Year" and were twice nominated for the John W. Campbell Award in the "Best New Writer" category.
In 2009, Joe released a new novel called “Better Serve Cold, ” which Joe himself dubbed the “fantasy thriller” and which was also a great success, but the “Heroes” that came out two years later finally secured the status of a fantasy master and took third place. place on the Sunday Times Hardcover Bestseller List. The next fantasy western novel, The Red Country, was featured on bestseller lists in Europe and America, receiving positive reviews from a reputable publication like The New York Times.
Oddly enough, Joe calls the police thrillers J. Ellroy and the television series "The Soprano Clan", "Wiretap" and "Star Cruiser Galaxy" the sources of his inspiration.
