Is love a gift? But what shall we do with it - accept or reject? The film "To the Wonder" / "To the Wonder" (USA, 2012, directed by Terrence Malik) presents each of us with a difficult choice.
We see heroes, ordinary people, who slowly sail along the course of life, but strive for their little happiness. Marina (Olga Kurylenko), a fragile girl who dreams of a strong feeling, meets the indifference of her young man Neil (Ben Affleck). He is cold and cannot express his attitude to Marina. Her love is like a rose, just as beautiful, but fading without the sun. The heroine seeks warmth and attention, falling into the arms of another man. But we see pain in her eyes and we feel experiences. Her passionate feminine essence remains unsolved. Neil begins dating Jane (Rachel McAdams), but cannot make her or herself happy.
Fate seems to test the heroes for strength, then pushing, then disconnecting them. Together with them we get entangled in a complex tangle of relationships. Sometimes it seems that Marina and the Nile are one, and then we see the serene sky, green trees on the screen, so close we hear their rustling. They seem to whisper to us about harmony. When the characters are worried, a strong wind appears, which tears leaves from the trees, and a seething stream of water. He suddenly falls upon us. Joyful shots of summer give way to a dull fall. So relationships undergo ups and downs - nature itself tells us about it.
Feelings between the heroes are silence, sometimes happy, sometimes tragic. Only short phrases thrown into the wind, looks in the eyes and light touches - everything is full of meaning. We find ourselves in a world where the mood of Marina and the Nile subtly shimmer. The camera creates an intimate space, smoothly following them, exploring the bends of their bodies during intimacy. Love is reborn on the screen to beautiful and strong music, and we cannot take our eyes off it.
“Do you think your love has faded? Perhaps it has become something more?” The film asks us. Heroes are looking for the answer to this question, but cannot be found. The film “To a miracle” is a discussion about the eternal. Love is the divine beginning that sleeps in each of us, and we so want to awaken it, feel with our soul and body, like a miracle.
