From biography
Denis Dmitrievich Gordeev was born in 1964 in Moscow in the family of an artist, who was attributed to twenty independent creators and who were hardly allowed to exhibitions in the 70-80s of the 20th century. Once at his exhibition a wedding portrait was stolen, where he and his wife Lyuba were depicted. On the paternal side, Denis's grandmother was a chemist, and grandfather was a metallurgical engineer. First he studied at the evening art school, then he graduated from the Art Institute, having received a professional education.
First Elves, Trolls, Hobbits
D. Gordeev hoped that he would paint pictures that have nothing to do with books. The first book he illustrated was The Tree and the Leaf by J.R.R. Tolkien. He was captured by this initial experience. When he read the first volume of The Lord of the Rings, he wondered how he would deal with fabulous creatures: hobbits, elves, trolls. Thus began his future brilliant career.
Amazingly different images
Since that time, D. Gordeev has embraced many books with his work, among which are the traditions of Germanic, Scandinavian peoples, and the author’s tales of Russian and foreign writers. He portrayed Alexander Nevsky, Gulliver, The Nutcracker, Mouse King, Turandot, Star Boy, a simple fisherman, an enchanted princess, three musketeers and D, Artagnan and others.
Beautiful illustrations
D. Gordeev loves clean colors, light and almost microscopic details. His pictures look realistic. They feel his attitude to the book not only as a spiritual value, but also as a material one. Buyers appreciate the beauty of his illustrations.
A completely different world
Some characters of his paintings are those who cause not only pity, but partly hostility. These are harlequins. The artist created a whole series of circus performers, whose life does not work out, and they are constantly depicted with objects of intoxication. Look does not sparkle, it is extinct. Neither craft nor life is a joy to them.
Artist's workshop
The illustrator's holy of holies looks creative. Behind the easel in the folders on the shelves are archival works and published books. He does not like many modern covers and illustrations, because in most cases they are made using a computer. An experienced illustrator believes that you need to draw not so much with a brush as with your head. He rarely uses a computer, only for auxiliary purposes.
