"Great Swede" Ingmar Bergman
Bergman was born July 14, 1918 in the family of a Lutheran pastor. Conservative religious views of his father, physical punishments in the family - all this will later find response in the work of the director. When Ingmar was nine years old, he, with the help of the then-popular "magic lantern", tried to create his own cartoons. It was then that his love for cinema and theater was born.
In 1937, Bergman entered the University of Stockholm, where he plans to study art history. But the passion for youth theater pushes school to the background. A bit later, a scandal with his father follows and Ingmar leaves his father's house, breaks off with studies and goes on tour with the theater troupe as a prop. However, the staging of the play "Father" becomes a failure and the young man has to get an assistant director at the Opera House. At the same time, Bergman wrote several plays, not at all hoping for their production. In the early 40s, one of the plays was staged at the Student Theater and received good reviews from critics and the press. Berman smiles luck - the production and the young playwright are noticed by the leaders of the leading Swedish film company. Bergman receives an invitation to work in the script department, where he not only edits other people's scripts, but also writes his own.
Personal life
In 1943, Bergman marries Els Fisher, and they have a daughter, Lena. A little later, one more thing is added to this pleasant news - the shooting of the film “Harassment” according to Bergman’s script begins. The film succeeds and is well received by the public, not only in the countries of Scandinavia, but also in America and Great Britain.
Marriage with Elsa does not last long. Already in April 1945, Bergman divorces her and marries Ellen Lundstrom. Later, the first daughter of Lena has stepbrothers and sisters - Eva, Jan, Anna and Mats. Now Bergman is not only an assistant director. He is the director himself and makes several films, the most significant of which is Prison. Pessimists and rebels are the main characters of the director’s work in this period. In the early 1950s, Bergman married a third time to journalist Gun Hagberg, and they have a son. In 1952, Bergman broke up with Hagberg and moved to Malmo, where he lives with a young actress Harriet Andersson. At this time, he combines the work of the director with the work of the director of productions in the city theater.
