Andrei Ivanovich Paul is a famous Russian surgeon who first applied chloroform anesthesia. In addition, he is known as the pioneer of a number of complex operations.
Biography of a famous person
Andrei Paul was born in St. Petersburg in 1794. The exact date of birth is not known, sources indicate dates from February 8 to February 19. The boy was born into a wealthy family. In his youth, he graduated from several private educational institutions, and then entered the Peter and Paul School. Andrei graduated with honors. After graduation, he worked for six months in the Kronstadt office. After that, he entered the Moscow Medical and Surgical Academy, which he graduated in 1815.
Career of Andrei Paul
Realizing that medicine was his calling, he began to develop in this area. He began his career in the residency of the Obukhov hospital. After six months of his work, he became the attending physician of the Minister of Enlightenment A.K. Razumovsky and family M.I. Flights. Together with these families, he traveled a lot and improved his education in the largest educational institutions in the world. During his life, he traveled to Paris, London, Naples, Vienna and Berlin.
After 4 years, Andrew Paul becomes the attending physician of Prince D.V. Golitsin. In the same year, he defended his doctoral dissertation and became a senior doctor at the Catherine Hospital.
In 1825, he defended another dissertation in surgery. In 1833, Andrei Paul became an ordinary professor and director of the surgical hospital of the New Catherine Hospital.
Throughout his life, he had to face several epidemics: in 1828 - typhoid, and in 1830 - cholera.
In 1859, Andrei Paul retired with the title of Honored Professor at Moscow University. He left for his estate in the Moscow region, where he died in 1864.
The famous scientist was buried at the Vvedensky cemetery on the outskirts of Moscow.
Achievements of Andrei Paul
- One of the most significant achievements in the professor’s life was the use of chloroform anesthesia. This event happened in 1847 in Moscow. The professor first used chloroform as an anesthetic, instead of a distracting conversation.
- The main direction in which the scientist worked was urology. The professor has spent more than 500 operations in his entire life.
- Andrei Paul was the creator of syphilis and some eye diseases treatment courses, which he taught at the university.
- In 1847, he carefully described cholera and methods of dealing with it. Under his name, an edition of the same name was released.
