Russian economist and public figure Andrei Yurievich Brezhnev is better known as the grandson of the Secretary General of the CPSU Central Committee. For almost two decades, his grandfather was at the head of the state. Andrei decided to continue the work of a famous relative and tried to build a career in the political arena, but failed.
Economist
Andrey was born in 1961. His childhood and youth passed in Moscow. The boy’s father, Yuri Brezhnev, was the son of the Secretary General and held large posts in the foreign trade ministry. Despite his busy work, he always found time to communicate with children and grandchildren, especially after retirement.
After graduating from school, the younger Brezhnev received higher education at MGIMO. A certified economist, an international student, joined the Soyuzkhimeksport association as an engineer. In 1985, he was entrusted with the post of attaché of the foreign economic division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the 90s, like many, he earned a living in the field of commerce and managed the charity fund “Children are our Future”.
Politician
Brezhnev took up a political career in 1998. He owns the initiative to create the "All-Russian Communist Social Movement", after which he decided to run for the post of head of the Sverdlovsk region. But he was defeated at the registration stage. A year later, Andrei nominated the Liberal Democratic Party as a candidate for the chair of the capital's deputy mayor, and again refused to include him in the lists of candidates. Support for the novice politician was provided by Alexei Mitrofanov, who was Andrei’s classmate and party colleague. On his advice, Brezhnev got to the State Duma elections as a self-nominated candidate got a little more than 2% of the vote, which did not give him the opportunity to get a deputy mandate. Slightly fewer voters supported him in the election of the governor of the Tula region in 2001.
In 2002, Brezhnev created the political movement of the "new communists", stating that they would not support Gennady Zyuganov in the upcoming elections. But the Ministry of Justice repeated its refusal to register and two years later a paradoxical situation occurred - Brezhnev joined the Communist Party and remained a member for 10 years.
In 2014, like-minded Communist Party of Social Justice elected Brezhnev as their leader. At number one from the CPSU 2012, he was nominated in the Republic of Mari El, Sevastopol and Crimea. The number of votes received was insufficient for passing to the regional Legislative Assembly. Two years later, the Rodina party proposed his candidacy in the State Duma elections - and again defeat. Andrei Yurievich’s path to the political Olympus turned out to be so thorny. During this time, he took part in pre-election races several times, but luck never accompanied him.
