From the biography of the head of the Ministry of Health of Russia
Veronika Skvortsova was born in Moscow on November 1, 1960. Her parents were hereditary doctors. Great-grandfather taught at the Medical Academy of St. Petersburg. Great-grandmother at one time graduated from women's medical courses, on the basis of which the Second Moscow Medical Institute was then created. Veronica's father worked as a professor in the department of nervous diseases of this university. There were four generations of doctors in the Skvortsova clan. She was going to continue the family tradition.
The girl received an excellent education: she graduated from a special school with a mathematical bias, having received a gold medal at the end of her studies. And then she entered the institute where her father worked. Veronica was interested not only in medicine. She liked classical music. Veronica in the school years mastered the piano.
Even before entering the university, Veronica was interested in questions of the structure of the brain, got acquainted with the discoveries of scientists in the field of neurosurgery. It was to this theme that she decided to devote her life.
Career in medicine
Veronika graduated from the second Moscow Medical Institute with honors in 1983. Already in her student years, the girl conducted scientific work at the department of her father and even published the results of her research. After residency and graduate school, Skvortsova remained to work at the university. In 1988, Veronika Igorevna became a candidate of science. Parents tried to help her in a scientific career.
In 1993, Skvortsova became a doctor of medical sciences. She became the youngest woman in the world to have such a degree. Veronika Igorevna combined work at the department with the leadership of the neuroresuscitation service in one of the capital's clinics. At 35, Skovrtsova was an assistant professor, two years later she headed the department, and at 39 she received a professorship. Some colleagues criticized such a rapid take-off, not without reason believing that such a climb up the career ladder would not have been possible without external support.
Career in politics
In 1999, Veronika Igorevna was among those who put forward the idea of organizing a stroke association. This disease the World Health Organization has declared a global epidemic.
Five years later, Skvortsova became a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Russian Federation, and then headed a specialized research institute. This institute has developed a program to combat vascular lesions. In the course of measures aimed at the prevention of stroke, it was recommended to carry out mass tomography. However, it was not without abuse: as experts believe, the deployment of a useful program to combat strokes was accompanied by the theft of funds allocated for the purchase of expensive equipment.
In 2008, Skvortsova became Deputy Minister of Health and Social Development of Russia. In this position, Veronika Igorevna was responsible for the development of legislative acts in the field of health protection. For selfless help to people who suffered during the Georgian-Ossetian conflict, Skvortsova was awarded the Order of Honor.
In 2011, Skvortsova announced that, as a result of the measures taken, mortality from stroke had almost halved.
Soon there was a division of the Ministry of Health and Social Development into two independent departments. In 2012, Veronika Igorevna headed the Ministry of Health. After that, she finally parted with the profession of a doctor and switched to the work of an official from medicine. Skvortsova has repeatedly stated that the problems that have accumulated in the field of health protection can be solved only by sequential actions.
During the time during which Skvortsova heads the ministry, the country approved the anti-smoking law, amended the legislation regarding medical examinations and attracting the population to a healthy lifestyle. The ministry led by Veronika Igorevna approved the initiative to improve the curricula of medical students and conduct periodic certification of teachers.
