Childhood and youth
True believing Christians are periodically persecuted by the current authorities. So it was at the dawn of the birth of religion. A similar situation has developed in the Soviet Union. Militant atheists in the post-revolutionary years staged persecution of believers. Vera Sergeevna Kushnir was born on September 24, 1926 in a family of Christians of the Protestant faith. The girl became the third child in the house. Parents lived in the largest city of Donbass. My father worked as a mining engineer. Mother was engaged in housework and raising children.
The girl grew painful. To somehow diversify everyday life, the children were sent to relatives in the summer for the village. There, at Aunt Katie, the future poetess joined not only labor in the garden, but also the beauties of local nature. When Vera was seven years old, she was enrolled in school. However, she failed to complete her education. The war began, and it became very difficult to live. The family did not have time to evacuate east. Fascist invaders came and established their orders. In the fall of 1943, the whole family was loaded into a carriage and taken to Germany.

Trial and loss
Workers brought from Russia were used in the most difficult and dirty jobs. Vera and relatives had to harvest the rutabaga in the fields. Build barracks and utility rooms. And even work at an aircraft factory. During all the movements and in the process of hard work, Vera found support in prayer. To reassure herself, she composed poems and memorized them. There was simply no handy paper and stationery at hand. When the war ended, parents decided to move to a permanent place of residence in the United States.
Despite the difficult living conditions, Vera's personal life was developing successfully. While on German territory, she met Eustachius Kushnir and in 1946 married him. The husband and wife remained in Europe for another three years - they had to wait for permission to move to America. During this period, two children were born and died in the family. A heartbroken mother with great difficulty came out of depression. Faith found consolation in prayer and support of her husband. In 1949, the couple moved to the famous Santa Barbara and reunited with relatives.
