Tom Tykver is a German film director who has become famous for his films such as Run Lola Run, Cloud Atlas, and Perfumer. There are more than 20 films in the master’s personal film library, which successfully prove that the modern European art house cinema may well appeal to the general public.
Childhood and youth
The biography of the future director began in the small West German town of Wuppertal in 1956. From an early age, Tom was fond of cinema, he shot his first mini-pictures on an amateur camera. Tykver loved cinema: in order to watch all the news, he got a job as a cleaner at the cinema. For the sake of an interesting film, the boy could well skip school, which his family did not like and negatively affected his performance.
Having hardly received a certificate, Tom tried to enter a film school, but failed in exams. He moved to Berlin, worked in cinemas and on television, took on any projects. After a couple of years, the ambitious young man smiled luck. He became the compiler of the film programs and met the director Rosa von Praunheim, who helped Tykvere begin his own professional filming.
