Biography
Thomas McCormick was born on the evening of sixteenth of May 1930 in a small town in the Texas outback called Waco. From early childhood, he adored American football (a combination of rugby and classic football, a tough contact game), which had become a national sport only ten years before and was experiencing the peak of its popularity.
Even before school, Thomas wanted to enter the American football section, but his parents allowed him to do this only in 1939, when a helmet and other safety rules appeared in the rules of this sport.
Having received school education, McCormick entered the Pacific College, and the main criterion for choosing an educational institution for him was the presence of a football team in him. Creativity on the field attracted the future famous athlete, and he tried several sports roles before finding his place - the position of a midfielder.
Playing as a midfielder in the college team, Thomas set football records in many categories of his youthful team.
Career
Thomas began his professional sports career in 1952 in the Los Angeles Rams team, a well-known team in the National League in Los Angeles, California, but only got on the field in 1953 and played for the club for three seasons until 1955.
Then, already in 1956, Thomas McCormick joined the San Francisco 49ers club, which played in the West Division of the same National Football League, founded in 1946. By the way, the club received its name in honor of the California Gold Rush of 1849. For a fairly young team, acquiring an experienced midfielder became a serious help, and the athletes were able to take several prestigious trophies for the season.
Unfortunately, the professional age of an American football player is usually short-lived, this game is traumatic and risky much more than even hockey or boxing. Thomas suffered 4 serious injuries during his performances on the field - one in a year. Due to injuries and their consequences, McCormick was able to play at the San Francisco 49ers club for only one season, and then, having healed, he took up coaching.
First, he worked as an assistant to the legendary Dutchman Norman Van Brocklin, who coached the Minnesota Vikings. Then he became the right-hand man of the no less famous Vince Lombardi, the Green Bay Packers coach, under whose leadership in the 60s the football club won the National League five times in seven years. By the way, the league’s main trophy, Super Bowl, is named after Lombardi.
