Ted Chan is well known to science fiction fans. An American writer with Chinese roots suddenly burst into world literature and managed to gain a foothold in it immediately. His creations are characterized by a peculiar style, similar to the terms of reference. That is what Chan captivated science fiction artists.
Biography: early years
Ted Chan was born on October 20, 1967 in Port Jefferson, 99 km from New York. Little is known about his childhood. After school, he became a student at the prestigious Brown University, where he mastered computer science. After graduation, Chan took notes for a computer magazine in Seattle. This subsequently left an imprint on his writing career.
Before joining literature, Ted managed to work in his specialty. So, he was a programmer in a number of computer companies, as well as in government institutions.
Creation
The Tower of Babel is Chan's debut creation. He presented this laconic tale to readers of the Omni in 1990. In it, Ted radically rethought biblical writing. In his book, people build a tower because of love for God, and not because of a quarrel. They just wanted to be closer to the Creator. Having finished the tower to the sky, people saw that the world resembles a cliche cylinder for copying cuneiform writing.
Fans of science fiction and critics have accepted this story with a bang. In Russia, it was first published in If.
Chan's first work was awarded the Nebula Prize. Also, the story was nominated for "Hugo" and "Locus". After such success, Ted ended up at the legendary Clarion Workshop, in which young writers participate.
In 1991, Chan published two science fiction stories: Division by Zero and Understand. The first work was nominated for Nebula, and the second - Hugo. At the same time, both stories became nominees for Locus.
In 1992, for the story "Understand, " Chan became the best author based on a survey of readers of Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine.
Then a lull followed. Chan for a long time did not publish new works. He returned to readers in 1998, introducing the story "The Story of Your Life". She has also been repeatedly awarded with various prizes.
A year later, Chan introduced a new work - the story "72 Letters". This book has been awarded the World Fantasy Award and Sidewise Award. In it, the writer reflects on the birth and reproduction of people as a constant finite value.
